Before even taking office, then-President-elect Donald J. Trump worked behind the scenes to negotiate a cease-fire in Gaza. From the beginning, many expressed doubts the deal would last – or wishes that it would not. Now, it would appear that this deal will not last. What passes for a government in Gaza, now refuses to release any more hostages, thus reneging on the deal. In response, Trump has made an indirect threat that full-scale war will break out all over again.
Elements of the Gaza cease-fire deal
As CNAV said after the announcement, the deal called for the immediate release of 33 hostages, all women, children, men 50 years old or older, and any younger man considered a “humanitarian case.” Talks on the release of more hostages, and withdrawals of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) from parts of Gaza, were to begin in February.
The Islamic Resistance Movement (Arabic Harakah al-Muqāwamah al-Islāmiyyah, abbreviated HAMAS) were releasing hostages, but only two or three at a time. Some who have come out, were as emaciated as any inmate of the Nazi concentration camps of Holocaust fame. President Trump remarked on this after three particularly emaciated hostages returned home over the weekend.
I watched the hostages come back today. And they looked like Holocaust survivors. They were in horrible condition. They were emaciated. It looked like many years ago, the Holocaust survivors. I don’t know how much longer we can take that….
At some point we're going to lose our patience when I see that scene that I saw today with people coming out of helicopters and airplanes that are emaciated, that look like they haven't had a meal in a month. No reason for that, and I don't know how much longer we can take.
They are in really bad shape, they have been treated brutally, horribly. Even the ones that came out earlier, they were in a little bit better shape, but mentally they were treated so badly. Who could take that?

The Daily Mail released some disturbing details on the treatment those three hostages received. Separately, The Times of Israel released these statistics on hostage release:
Seventy-three of the 251 hostages abducted by Hamas on October 7 currently remain in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 34 confirmed dead by the IDF.
Hamas has so far released 21 hostages – civilians, soldiers, and Thai nationals – during the current, ongoing ceasefire. The terror group freed 105 civilians during a weeklong truce in late November 2023, and four hostages were released before that.
Eight hostages have been rescued alive by troops, and the bodies of 40 hostages have also been recovered, including three mistakenly killed by the Israeli military as they tried to escape their captors.
Hamas is also holding two Israeli civilians who entered the Strip in 2014 and 2015, as well as the body of an IDF soldier who was killed in 2014. The body of another IDF soldier, also killed in 2014, was recovered from Gaza in January.
Actually, most media list seventy-six hostages remaining. This could reflect confusion over whether the seventy-six included, or did not include, the three released Saturday.
On Sunday (January 9), Trump returned to a theme he sounded last week: that the United States would redevelop Gaza. During that time, Trump would not allow residents to return to homes or apartments that are now rubble. As to where they would live in the meantime, he told Fox News’ Bret Baier:
We’ll build beautiful communities for the 1.9 million people … we’ll build beautiful communities, safe communities … we’ll build safe communities a little bit away from where they are where all of this danger is.
He clarified that the redevelopment process would take years, to clear away live ordnance and rubble, and to build permanent structures. Last week he’d talked about filling in the tunnels HAMAS has dug over the years.
Breakdown
But yesterday (January 10) the cease-fire deal seemed already to be breaking down. HAMAS accused the IDF of breaking the cease-fire by not allowing some “civilians” to return as fast as they wanted, and by holding up some relief supplies. As ever, one should never rely on a HAMAS account, and Israeli officials have denied it.
HAMAS then posted to their Telegram account the following threat:
The handover of the Zionist prisoners who were scheduled to be released next Saturday, February 15, 2025, will be postponed until further notice and until the occupation commits to and compensates for the entitlements of the past weeks retroactively.
Reporters asked President Trump about that, during one of the many informal press conferences he’s held in the Oval Office. In response – with a deceptively casual air – he gave HAMAS a deadline.
If all the Gaza hostages aren’t returned by Saturday at 12 p.m. – I think it’s an appropriate time – I would say cancel it, and all bets are off, and let h**l break out. I’d say they ought to be returned by 12 o’clock on Saturday. And if they’re not returned – all of them, not in drips and drabs, not two and one and three and four and two – by Saturday at 12 o’clock. And after that, I would say, all h**l is going to break out.
Any decision to resume full hostilities rests with Israel, not the United States. As to what Trump meant by “all h**l [breaking] out,” he suggested that HAMAS would soon find out.
More IDF elements have already taken positions on the Gaza border, according to The Wall Street Journal. The IDF is also canceling leaves for soldiers currently deployed in the region.
Analysis
The Fourth Arab-Israeli War began horrifically and is still going on. The condition of the three latest released hostages illustrates why no deal with HAMAS can possibly hold. Why HAMAS released those men, instead of simply executing them, is impossible to determine. HAMAS is full of sadistic men who have taken to heart the bitter resentment of Muhammad, after the Medina Jews rejected him.
No one of good heart can sympathize either with HAMAS or with those who voted them into power in 2006. Not without complete ignorance of the atrocities they have committed throughout their existence, or desensitization to actual war crimes. HAMAS has never lacked for recruits – because they run the school system. They kill pets in front of children, to desensitize them to the suffering of others. They cynically “repurpose” any humanitarian aid for use in active warfare. Worse, they actually teach that Jews are not human – that they are at best simian, at worst porcine or canine. Small wonder, then, that they committed the atrocities of October 7, 2023 – and thereafter, in their treatment of hostages. That treatment violates every known rule of warfare.
Many who call themselves Christians will protest that one shouldn’t judge every individual by the actions of a group’s leaders. “Covenant theologians” actually insist that the HAMAS atrocities did not occur, or have sufficient provocation. But they are too well documented to deny, and too severe to ignore or excuse.
Wither Gaza or its people?
Those who commit atrocious acts in war, do so either in the supreme confidence of total ultimate victory, or out of a spite profound enough to produce total indifference to any possible consequences. For good reason, most societies do not trust those who have tasted human flesh. Neither can we trust any member of HAMAS – or any of a number of irregulars who accompanied them on October 7, 2023. The only “Palestinians” who are fit to share a civilized society, are those who got out of Gaza long ago. They rejected the blatant conditioning of HAMAS, and refused to inculcate that into their children.
President Trump has offered a way to break this cycle, by rebuilding Gaza as a good place to live. Whether any Palestinians have the temperament to take it, is for them to decide. But HAMAS rates total, complete annihilation, to the last armed effective.
HAMAS asked for that, with their latest provocation. CNAV would advise the IDF to take no prisoners. Honor President Trump’s suggested deadline, of course – the world expects that. After that, go back in and finish the job.
